BASIC

A family of beginner-friendly programming languages designed for simple, readable code.

BASIC is a family of beginner-friendly programming languages built around simple, readable commands and low setup overhead. Its design makes it easy to write small programs quickly, which is why many BASIC variants have been used for teaching, prototyping, and lightweight automation. In cybersecurity, that ease matters because the same low barrier that helps beginners also helps attackers, defenders, and malware authors create scripts fast. BASIC descendants have also influenced macro and desktop scripting environments, where simple code can automate tasks, launch payloads, or manipulate documents if security controls are weak.

For defenders, BASIC-style code can be easy to inspect, making it useful in training and in understanding legacy scripts. For attackers, the language’s simplicity can speed up phishing add-ons, loader scripts, or quick proof-of-concept tools. The security lesson is not that BASIC is unsafe by itself, but that readable, accessible languages are powerful and should be controlled with the same care as any other code: limit execution rights, review scripts, and disable unnecessary macro or scripting features.
