Baseband mode

A low-level signal-processing mode used to work with raw radio data.

Baseband mode is a low-level signal-processing state in which a radio device works with raw or minimally processed signals before they are converted into the formats used by higher-level communication protocols. Depending on the hardware, this can expose more direct control over how radio signals are generated, received, or analyzed.

In cyber security, baseband access matters because it may reveal capabilities that ordinary device interfaces and documentation do not show. Researchers use it to inspect radio behavior and test hardware, while attackers could potentially misuse exposed radio functions if they can access the mode and the device supports relevant operations. A reported ESP32 capability illustrates why undocumented behavior should be verified rather than assumed: defenders should test hardware and firmware, document available functions, and assess actual access requirements before drawing conclusions about risk.
