Backup status

The condition of recovery copies that can limit damage after an incident.

Backup status is the current condition of an organization’s recovery copies: whether they exist, are current, are complete, and can actually be restored. In practice, a backup is only useful if it is intact, reachable, and free from tampering or encryption. Security teams monitor backup status to judge how much damage an incident could cause and how quickly systems can be rebuilt.

It matters because ransomware often targets backups first. Attackers may delete snapshots, encrypt backup servers, or look for offline copies to reduce the victim’s recovery options and increase extortion pressure. Defenders check backup status during incident response to confirm the last clean restore point, test recovery procedures, and verify that backup systems are separated from production accounts. Good backup status can turn a severe intrusion into a contained outage instead of a full operational loss.
