Backup recovery testing is the practice of regularly restoring backup data to verify that it is complete, usable, and fast enough to support business recovery. It is more than checking that a backup job finished successfully; the real test is whether systems, files, and configurations can be brought back into service when needed.
This matters in ransomware defense because attackers often try to delete, encrypt, or corrupt backups before triggering extortion. If recovery has never been tested, an organization may discover too late that its backups are missing key files, contain malware, or cannot be restored within the required time. In manufacturing and industrial environments, testing should include engineering documents, QA records, and system images, not just office data. Regular recovery tests help defenders confirm restoration procedures, identify gaps in retention or access controls, and reduce downtime during an incident.
