Backup infrastructure is the collection of systems used to create, store, manage, and restore backup data. It can include backup servers, storage repositories, retention policies, access controls, and recovery tools. In practice, it is the machinery that makes recovery possible after data loss, outages, or malware attacks.
In cyber security, backup infrastructure matters because it is often the last line of defense against ransomware. If attackers can reach backup consoles, administrative credentials, or connected storage, they may delete snapshots, encrypt backup files, or disable recovery jobs to remove a victim’s safety net. Defenders reduce this risk by separating backup systems from production networks, using immutable or offline copies, limiting privileged access, and regularly testing restores. A backup that cannot be restored quickly is not a reliable defense.
