Backup agent

Software installed on endpoints to manage backups, often with elevated privileges to reach protected files and services.

A backup agent is software installed on an endpoint to manage file and system backups. To do this reliably, it often runs with elevated privileges so it can read protected files, access services, and copy data that normal users cannot reach. That trust makes the agent a sensitive part of the host, not just a maintenance tool.

In cyber security, backup agents matter because they can become a high-value target for privilege escalation. If an attacker already has local access and finds a flaw in the agent, they may be able to run code as a stronger account such as SYSTEM, disable defenses, or interfere with backup operations. Defenders should treat backup agents as critical software: keep them patched, limit local access, and monitor for unexpected privileged activity or unusual child processes from the agent.
