Backend compromise

Unauthorized access to internal systems that manage services, approvals, or transaction workflows.

Backend compromise means an attacker gains unauthorized access to internal systems that run a service behind the public interface: admin consoles, approval tools, transaction processors, signing services, APIs, orchestration logic, or monitoring systems. These systems are often not visible to users, but they control what the platform can do.

It matters because a backend foothold can let an attacker change permissions, approve withdrawals, trigger transfers, or bypass normal checks without breaking the underlying blockchain or application protocol. In real attacks, this often looks like abuse of admin credentials, stolen API keys, compromised service accounts, or vulnerable internal software. Defenders reduce the risk with strong segmentation, least privilege, MFA for operators, hardware-backed signing, strict approval workflows, audit logging, and anomaly detection on privileged actions.
