Avionics are the electronic systems used on aircraft for navigation, communication, sensing, display, and control. They include units such as weather radar, flight management computers, radios, sensors, and cockpit interfaces. In practice, avionics are tightly integrated hardware and software systems that must keep working in harsh conditions: vibration, temperature changes, electrical noise, and limited maintenance windows.
In cyber security, avionics matter because they are safety-critical and often highly interconnected. An attacker may target maintenance ports, update mechanisms, wireless links, or shared data buses to disrupt operation, alter sensor data, or degrade pilot awareness. Defenders focus on authentication, firmware integrity, segmentation, secure configuration, and rigorous testing so one compromised component cannot affect the whole aircraft. Teardowns and inspections help reveal how much complexity is hidden inside a single box, which is useful for both reliability analysis and threat modeling.
