Availability loss

A service outage caused by overload or disruption of access.

Availability loss is the failure of a service to stay reachable or usable. It can happen when traffic volumes exceed capacity, when a network path is disrupted, or when a critical dependency such as DNS, hosting, or a login portal becomes inaccessible. Unlike data theft, the immediate impact is downtime: users cannot connect, transactions stop, and operational systems may degrade or fail.

In cyber security, availability loss is a primary effect of denial-of-service activity, including DDoS attacks and DDoS-for-hire abuse. Attackers try to exhaust bandwidth, server resources, or application limits so legitimate requests are denied. Defenders reduce the risk with rate limiting, traffic filtering, upstream scrubbing, failover capacity, and resilient architecture. Monitoring for sudden spikes and protecting public endpoints helps limit the blast radius when a flood or infrastructure disruption occurs.
