AV/EDR refers to antivirus and endpoint detection and response tools. AV focuses on known malware patterns and suspicious files, while EDR monitors endpoint behavior for signs of compromise, such as process injection, credential theft, lateral movement, or ransomware staging. Together, they help stop malicious activity before it spreads across a network.
In ransomware cases, AV/EDR is often an early target because disabling endpoint protection removes one of the main barriers to encryption. Attackers may try to tamper with services, kill security processes, add exclusions, or block alerts so they can deploy payloads quickly across many hosts. Defenders rely on AV/EDR not only for blocking, but also for detection, isolation, and forensic visibility. Strong configurations, tamper protection, and alerting on attempted disablement are critical because a brief gap in endpoint defense can let an intruder move from initial access to full ransomware deployment.
