Authorization workflow

The process used to approve and register devices or users before access is granted.

An authorization workflow is the approval and registration process that determines whether a user, device, or service is allowed to join a protected environment. It usually includes identity checks, policy decisions, enrollment steps, and the creation of a trusted record such as a device certificate, role assignment, or management approval.

In cybersecurity, this workflow matters because it is the gate between an authenticated identity and real access. If attackers can bypass, fake, or confuse the workflow, they may register unauthorized devices, gain privileged access, or impersonate trusted systems. Defenders protect these workflows with strong identity verification, out-of-band approvals, least privilege, and logging of enrollments and changes. Reviewing authorization events for anomalies helps spot abuse in control-plane systems before a fake user or device becomes fully trusted.
