Authorization timeline

the time needed for permits and approvals before a project can begin or expand.

An authorization timeline is the period required to obtain permits, sign-offs, and formal approvals before a project can start or expand. In security-sensitive environments, it can cover legal review, risk assessment, procurement approval, change management, and regulatory clearance. The longer this timeline is, the slower an organization can deploy new systems or replace outdated ones.

In cyber security, authorization timelines matter because delay can create exposure. If a company cannot quickly approve firewall upgrades, hardware refreshes, cloud migration, or emergency capacity changes, it may keep running vulnerable or unsupported systems longer than planned. Attackers benefit from that lag, especially after an incident when defenders need rapid action. Strong defenders reduce risk by pre-approving standard changes, using emergency authorization paths, and mapping which critical updates can bypass normal delays without losing control.
