Authentication Systems

Mechanisms that verify identity, such as certificates, logins, tokens, and digital signatures.

Authentication systems are the mechanisms that confirm a user, device, or service is really who it claims to be. They can rely on passwords and logins, but also on certificates, one-time tokens, smart cards, biometric factors, and digital signatures. In modern networks, authentication often happens before any data is exchanged, making it a front-line control for access to applications, cloud services, VPNs, and administrative tools.

They matter because a weak or compromised authentication layer can let attackers impersonate legitimate users, move laterally, or hijack trusted connections. Defenders strengthen these systems with multi-factor authentication, certificate management, secure key storage, and careful identity checks between services. In post-quantum planning, authentication systems are especially important because many of them depend on public-key cryptography for certificates and signatures. If those primitives must change, organizations need crypto agility so identity services can be updated without breaking trust relationships or availability.
