Audio capture is the malicious collection of sound from a device microphone or other audio input path. In practice, malware may request microphone permissions, call operating system audio APIs, or record through installed drivers to create files that contain ambient speech and background noise. Even short recordings can reveal passwords spoken aloud, meeting content, location clues, or sensitive business details.
In cyber security, audio capture matters because it turns an ordinary endpoint into a listening device. Spyware and remote access tools may store recordings locally and later exfiltrate them, or stream them to an operator as part of surveillance. Defenders look for unusual microphone access, suspicious processes invoking audio libraries, unexpected audio file creation, and outbound transfers from hosts that should not be recording. On managed systems, restricting microphone permissions and monitoring endpoint behavior can reduce the risk.
