Audience Modeling

The practice of estimating how different groups may react to content or products.

Audience modeling is the practice of estimating how different groups are likely to react to a message, product, or experience. In cyber security, it helps predict which users will click, trust, ignore, or report content, based on factors such as role, behavior, language, and prior exposure.

It matters because attackers use the same idea to make phishing, scam pages, and influence campaigns more convincing. By tailoring wording, timing, and delivery to a specific audience, they increase the chance of a successful credential theft or malware infection. Defenders use audience modeling for security awareness training, phishing simulations, and risk communication, so warnings are understandable to the right people. The main security concern is over-trusting synthetic predictions: if models are trained on biased or incomplete data, they can misjudge real users and create blind spots in policy, detection, or messaging.
