ATG

Automatic tank gauge, a computerized device used to monitor underground storage tanks.

ATG stands for automatic tank gauge, a computerized device used to monitor underground storage tanks. It collects operational data such as fuel level, temperature, and sometimes leak or alarm conditions, then presents those readings to operators and maintenance systems. In fuel-handling and other industrial environments, an ATG is part of the operational trust layer: staff rely on its output to make safety, inventory, and compliance decisions.

In cyber security, ATGs matter because a compromised monitoring device can mislead operators, expose sensitive site information, or provide an attacker a foothold into a broader OT network. They are often attractive targets when they are remotely reachable, poorly segmented, or maintained through weak remote-access paths. Defenders reduce risk by inventorying ATG assets, removing unnecessary exposure, separating OT from corporate networks, restricting maintenance access, and patching devices without leaving them open to untrusted networks.
