Assessment systems

internal tools that can store hiring, scoring, and review records.

Assessment systems are internal applications used to manage hiring workflows, candidate scores, interview notes, test results, and review records. In many organizations they sit close to HR and recruitment data, which can include names, contact details, resumes, salary expectations, and feedback from managers.

They matter in cyber security because this information is sensitive and highly leverageable. Attackers value assessment systems not only for personal data, but also for documents that can reveal internal processes, staffing plans, and decision criteria. In ransomware or extortion cases, a threat actor may claim to have stolen records from such a system to pressure the organization before any breach is verified. Defenders reduce risk by limiting access, separating HR systems from general corporate networks, logging all administrator activity, encrypting stored records, and regularly testing backups and retention controls. If exposed, these systems can create both privacy and operational damage.
