Assessment preparation

The work of collecting evidence, scoping systems, and readying controls for review.

Assessment preparation is the work of getting an environment ready for a security review or audit. It includes identifying which systems are in scope, collecting evidence such as policies, logs, screenshots, and inventories, and making sure controls are documented and operating as intended. In programs like CMMC, this step is what turns a security requirement into something an assessor can verify.

It matters because weak preparation often creates false confidence: controls may exist on paper but fail under review, or critical assets may be left out of scope. Good preparation helps defenders find gaps before an external assessment does, such as missing access reviews, incomplete asset lists, or inconsistent configurations. Attackers also benefit when organizations rush this work, because last-minute cleanup can hide real weaknesses and leave systems poorly hardened. Strong assessment preparation supports both compliance and security by keeping evidence current, scope accurate, and remediation continuous rather than reactive.
