ASP.NET machine key

A secret used by ASP.NET applications to protect tokens and state; if abused, it can complicate cleanup and persistence.

The ASP.NET machine key is a secret configuration value used by ASP.NET applications to sign and encrypt sensitive data such as authentication cookies, view state, and other protected tokens. It helps the server tell whether data is genuine and unchanged.

In cyber security, this key matters because anyone who obtains it can sometimes forge valid tokens, tamper with protected state, or decrypt information the application expects to trust. In attacks, that can support session hijacking, privilege abuse, or even code execution in poorly designed legacy flows. In defense, administrators should protect the key carefully, avoid reusing it across unrelated systems, and rotate it after suspected compromise so old malicious tokens stop working. Rotation is also important during cleanup, because a stolen key can let an attacker keep generating trusted data even after passwords or accounts are reset.
