ASMF

Active Substance Master File, a regulatory file for active ingredient details.

ASMF stands for Active Substance Master File. It is a regulatory dossier that contains controlled technical details about a drug’s active ingredient, such as its manufacture, quality controls, specifications, and supporting evidence for regulators. Because it describes the core substance in a medicine, it is often treated as highly sensitive and shared only with authorized parties.

In cyber security, ASMFs matter because they are valuable to extortion groups, competitors, and thieves. A leaked ASMF can expose intellectual property, reveal supply-chain and manufacturing knowledge, and create compliance risk for a pharmaceutical company. Attackers often target document repositories that hold ASMFs alongside Drug Master Files, clinical reports, and FDA or EMA submissions. Defenders should protect these files with strict access controls, segmentation, encryption, logging, and rapid revocation of unnecessary permissions, since the documents themselves can become the leverage in an extortion attempt.
