ASIC

Application-Specific Integrated Circuit, a chip built for a particular task rather than general-purpose computing.

An ASIC, or Application-Specific Integrated Circuit, is a chip designed to do one job very efficiently instead of running many different workloads like a CPU. In cyber security, ASICs matter because their fixed function can deliver high speed, low power use, and predictable behavior, which is why they show up in routers, storage systems, mining hardware, and custom AI accelerators.

Attackers may use ASIC-backed hardware when brute force, password cracking, or crypto-mining needs maximum throughput. Defenders use ASICs in appliances and infrastructure to accelerate packet filtering, encryption, or signal processing. The security tradeoff is that ASIC-based systems can be harder to inspect, patch, or repurpose, so supply-chain trust, firmware control, and component provenance become important. In short, an ASIC can improve performance and resilience, but it also makes the hardware chain a security boundary.
