Article 32

The GDPR provision requiring appropriate technical and organizational measures to secure personal data.

Article 32 of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires controllers and processors to apply appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect personal data. It is risk-based: the exact controls depend on the sensitivity of the data, the threats involved, and the state of the art. In practice, Article 32 links privacy compliance to core security engineering, including access control, encryption, authentication, logging, backup, and secure recovery.

In cyber security, Article 32 matters because it turns security into a legal obligation that can be tested by regulators. Defenses must support confidentiality, integrity, availability, and resilience, not just written policies. Poor password handling, weak privileged access, insecure APIs, or untested disaster recovery can all indicate gaps in compliance. For defenders, the safest approach is to prove that controls are designed for the risk, monitored in operation, and regularly tested so personal data remains protected during both attacks and system failures.
