Archived data

Older stored records that can still contain sensitive personal or business information.

Archived data is information kept for long-term retention rather than day-to-day use. It may include older employee or customer records, contracts, financial documents, and internal procedures. Although stored records are no longer active, they can still contain sensitive personal or business information.

Archives matter in cyber security because attackers may seek them for extortion, identity theft, or disclosure of confidential details. They can be overlooked when access permissions, monitoring, or retention practices are designed mainly for current systems. Defenders should inventory archive locations, restrict access, protect copies with appropriate encryption and backups, and securely delete records when retention is no longer required. If an account or server is suspected of compromise, review archive access logs and verify any claims of data exposure.
