Approximate measurement

A reading that should be treated as close, but not exact.

An approximate measurement is a reading that is close to the actual value but is not guaranteed to be exact. Its accuracy may be limited by the instrument, calibration, measurement conditions, or the method used. For example, an LCR meter may provide a useful estimate of a component’s electrical properties, but its specifications and operating limits determine how much confidence to place in the result.

In cyber security, measurements such as scan results, risk scores, and performance metrics can also be approximate. Treating them as exact can lead to missed vulnerabilities or misplaced confidence in a defense. Check the assumptions, uncertainty, and limits behind a reading, and verify important findings with calibrated tools or independent methods.
