Application Security (AppSec)

The discipline of finding, fixing, and reducing risks in software applications.

Application Security, or AppSec, is the discipline of finding, fixing, and reducing risks in software applications. It covers the full software lifecycle: design, coding, testing, deployment, and patching. The goal is to prevent common weaknesses such as injection bugs, broken authentication, insecure access control, and unsafe dependency use before they become exploitable.

In real security work, AppSec shows up as code review, static and dynamic testing, dependency scanning, threat modeling, and remediation validation. During an attack, AppSec helps teams understand how a flaw can be exploited and prioritize the safest fix. In defense, it ensures a patch actually closes the vulnerability without breaking normal behavior. That is why AI-generated fixes still need human review: an AppSec reviewer must confirm the change is correct, complete, and safe to ship.
