Any-any entry

a permissive firewall rule that allows any source, destination, or service.

An any-any entry is a highly permissive firewall rule that allows traffic from any source to any destination using any service or port. In practice, it is the broadest possible allow rule, and it is usually created for convenience, troubleshooting, or temporary exceptions.

Any-any rules matter because they can erase the protective value of a firewall if they remain in place too long. Attackers benefit when these entries expose internal systems, enable lateral movement, or bypass segmentation controls. Defenders treat them as high-risk items during rule reviews, looking for business justification, expiration dates, and narrower alternatives such as specific IPs, ports, or applications. In mature environments, any-any entries are often the first rules to be challenged during audits and policy cleanup.
