Anonymization Network

A network or service that routes traffic in a way that can make its origin harder to trace.

An anonymization network is a service or collection of relays that routes internet traffic through intermediary systems, making the original source harder to identify from the destination’s perspective. Commercial privacy services and layered relay networks are examples. They can protect legitimate users’ privacy, but they do not make activity impossible to trace.

In cyber security, traffic from an IP address associated with an anonymization service can complicate investigation and attribution. Attackers may use such services to scan systems or send exploit attempts while obscuring their network path. That IP alone does not establish who operated the traffic, their motive, or where they are located. Defenders should treat it as one clue, correlate it with behavior and other telemetry, and avoid assuming that an anonymized connection proves a successful attack.
