An alternative cloud is a cloud platform built for narrower workload needs, such as AI training or inference, sovereign deployments, or edge performance. Unlike general-purpose hyperscalers, it is optimized for a specific use case, often with dedicated GPUs, lower latency, or locality controls. Security teams care because specialization changes the control plane: identity, logging, data residency, and incident handling may differ from standard enterprise cloud patterns.
In real attacks and defenses, the main issue is governance. A new provider can create fresh trust relationships, new audit paths, and new places for misconfiguration. Defenders should verify the shared responsibility model, logging quality, export controls, and exit options before migration. If the platform supports regulated workloads, it must provide evidence that data, models, and administrator actions are traceable. Without that, the organization may gain performance but lose visibility and control.
