ALPR, or Automated License Plate Recognition, is a system that uses cameras and OCR to read vehicle plates and convert them into searchable records. Those records often include the plate number, time, location, camera ID, and sometimes linked images or search metadata. In cyber security, the key issue is not only capture, but how the resulting database is protected and governed.
ALPR systems matter because they can reveal movement patterns, associations, and sensitive location history at scale. If access controls are weak, an insider or intruder can search plate data to track a person or organization. Defenders reduce risk with role-based access, audit logs, encryption, retention limits, and strict sharing rules. Secure ALPR deployments treat the plate database like sensitive investigative data, not just camera output.
