AISI is Italy’s domestic intelligence service, responsible for internal security, counterintelligence, and threats inside the country. In cyber security terms, it is part of the state’s defensive and oversight ecosystem rather than a commercial security product or an attack technique.
AISI matters because modern espionage, spyware, and influence operations often cross between physical, legal, and digital domains. Domestic intelligence agencies may use logs, device artifacts, and administrative records to investigate suspected surveillance, attribute hostile activity, or verify whether sensitive tools were used lawfully. In practice, AISI can appear in reports about lawful interception, counter-espionage, or audits of surveillance systems, where the key question is whether evidence shows authorized activity, misuse, or gaps in accountability. Its role highlights a core cyber security principle: records are only useful when they are complete, preserved, and interpreted within the correct legal and operational scope.
