An AI Maturity Model is a framework used to assess how advanced an organization is in governing and operating AI systems. It typically looks at areas such as ownership, approvals, data handling, monitoring, documentation, and continuous improvement. Rather than asking only whether AI is “allowed,” it measures whether AI is managed in a repeatable, evidence-based way.
In cyber security, this matters because AI risk is not limited to the model itself. Weak maturity can lead to shadow AI deployments, poor access control, unclear accountability, and missed monitoring when models drift or data changes. Security teams and auditors use maturity models to identify gaps, compare current practice against target controls, and prioritize fixes. In defense, the model helps organizations turn vague governance claims into measurable process: who approved the system, how it is tested, how incidents are reviewed, and how often controls are rechecked. Used well, it supports safer AI adoption; used badly, it becomes a paper exercise.
