An AI key is a secret credential used to authenticate to an AI service or account. It works like an API key: the holder can send requests, access models, consume quotas, and sometimes manage billing or data stored with the service. Because the key is the proof of identity, anyone who copies it can act as the legitimate user until the key is revoked or rotated.
In cyber security, AI keys matter because they are high-value secrets. Attackers often hunt for them in source code, configuration files, browser storage, logs, chat transcripts, or environment variables. A stolen key can be used for fraud, data theft, service abuse, or to hide activity behind a trusted account. Defenders protect AI keys with secret managers, least-privilege access, key rotation, monitoring for unusual usage, and automated scanning to keep keys out of code and shared files.
