Agentic execution is the part of an AI workflow that turns a plan into action. Instead of only generating text, the system decides which steps to take, which tools to call, and how to sequence a multistep task with limited human intervention. In practice, this can include searching data, writing files, invoking APIs, or triggering downstream workflows.
It matters in cyber security because execution is where an AI agent can create real impact, good or bad. A compromised or overly trusted agent may overreach, exfiltrate data, or launch unwanted actions by chaining tools and retries. Defenders use agentic execution controls to reduce that risk: least-privilege access, tool allowlists, step-level policy checks, approval gates, logging, and sandboxing. A well-designed execution layer makes agent behavior more predictable, auditable, and safer to deploy.
