Agent Host

A machine running a monitoring agent that communicates with a central platform.

An agent host is a machine that runs a monitoring or management agent and sends telemetry, status, or control data back to a central platform. In security tools, the host may be a server, virtual machine, or endpoint that collects local information and relays it for inventory, alerting, backup, or policy enforcement.

Agent hosts matter because they often sit close to sensitive systems and trust boundaries. If an attacker can compromise the agent host, they may gain visibility into infrastructure, disrupt monitoring, or use the agent’s communication path to pivot toward other services. Defenders should treat these systems like management assets: restrict network access, segment agent traffic, keep software patched, and watch for unusual listeners, service changes, or outbound connections. In real attacks, exposed agent ports and vulnerable agent services are common targets because they can offer direct code execution or a foothold into the control plane.
