Age prediction

Estimating a user's age from indirect signals instead of direct confirmation.

Age prediction is the estimation of a person’s age from indirect signals, such as writing style, interaction patterns, device behavior, or account activity, instead of asking for a direct age declaration. In cybersecurity and privacy engineering, it is used to decide whether to apply child-safety controls, access limits, or fraud checks.

This matters because age is a sensitive attribute. If a system infers it from behavioral data, it may need to observe more than users expect, creating profiling risk and reducing data minimization. Prediction errors can also misclassify people, giving minors weaker protections or forcing adults into unnecessary restrictions.

In real systems, age prediction appears in content moderation, parental-control flows, and youth-focused chatbots. Defenders try to limit the signals used, keep confidence thresholds conservative, and provide a way to correct mistakes. Attackers may try to spoof behavior or blend in to evade age-based safeguards.
