Advisory board

A non-executive group that provides expertise and guidance but does not usually run day-to-day operations.

An advisory board is a non-executive group of subject-matter experts that gives guidance, review, and strategic input to a company or project. Unlike management or a board of directors, it usually has no authority over daily operations, budgets, or product decisions.

In cybersecurity, advisory boards matter because security tools often need deep domain knowledge to be practical. Former operators, engineers, or incident responders can help vendors design controls that fit real environments, especially in critical infrastructure like rail, power, or manufacturing. An advisory board can improve credibility and reduce blind spots, but it is not a security control by itself. It does not guarantee how a product is built, what data it accesses, or whether risky AI actions are approved by humans. In practice, advisory boards support better defense by shaping safer design and governance, while operational control still belongs to the organization deploying the system.
