An adoption gap is the difference in usage rates between groups, organizations, or regions. In cybersecurity, it shows how quickly a control, tool, or policy is being taken up across different parts of an environment. For example, one business unit may have full multifactor authentication and endpoint protection, while another still relies on older workflows or unapproved tools.
This matters because attackers look for the weakest, least-updated, or least-governed areas. A large adoption gap can create inconsistent patching, uneven logging, shadow IT, and gaps in AI governance. Security teams use adoption-gap analysis to spot where training, rollout, or enforcement is lagging, then prioritize those areas before they become easy entry points or sources of data-handling mistakes.
