Administrator impersonation

A condition where an attacker is treated as a privileged admin account.

Administrator impersonation is a security failure where an attacker is accepted by a system as if they were a privileged admin user. It usually happens when identity checks are broken, such as weak token validation, faulty session handling, or missing authorization checks after login. The result is not just “logging in” as someone else, but inheriting the rights of an account that can view, change, or delete sensitive data.

This matters because admin privileges often unlock control-plane actions such as reading configuration, creating users, changing policies, or running database queries. In a cloud or analytics platform, that can turn a single authentication bug into broad exposure across many connected systems. Defenders look for strict verification of signatures, issuers, audiences, and claims, plus least-privilege permissions, audit logs, and alerts for admin-claim attempts. Preventing impersonation means checking both who made the request and whether they should be allowed to do the action.
