Admin token

A privileged credential that can act with administrative rights.

An admin token is a privileged credential that lets a user, service, or attacker act with administrative rights. Unlike a normal session cookie or user token, it usually carries broad permissions: changing settings, creating accounts, managing repositories, or issuing other credentials. Because it is a bearer secret, anyone who possesses it can often use it until it expires or is revoked.

In cyber security, admin tokens matter because they can turn a small authentication flaw into full platform compromise. If an application incorrectly issues or accepts one, an attacker may skip the normal login process and jump straight to high-trust actions. Defenders reduce this risk by limiting token scope, using short lifetimes, rotating secrets, logging token issuance and use, and protecting administrative APIs with strong authentication and approval controls.
