Ad tech is the software and service stack used to automate digital advertising, including ad delivery, audience targeting, bidding, attribution, and measurement. It often sits between publishers, apps, advertisers, data brokers, and exchange partners, moving identifiers and behavioral signals through many systems in near real time.
In cybersecurity, ad tech matters because it is a high-volume data-routing environment with a wide trust boundary. Sensitive or personal data can leak through overly broad sharing, weak access controls, poor segmentation, or misconfigured partner integrations. Attackers may abuse ad-tech identifiers for tracking, profiling, or data exfiltration, while defenders use data minimization, consent controls, strict retention limits, and partner governance to reduce exposure. Even without a classic breach, unsafe ad-tech data flows can create privacy and compliance failures.
