Activation Lock is an Apple anti-theft control that ties an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch to the owner’s Apple account. When it is enabled, the device cannot be reactivated, erased for reuse, or set up by a new user without the account credentials or approved recovery access. This makes stolen hardware much less valuable and helps deter resale after theft.
In cyber security, Activation Lock matters because it turns account secrecy into a physical-device defense. Attackers therefore often target the person, not the phone: they use phishing, vishing, or fake support calls to trick victims into revealing a passcode, verification code, or account details. Defenders should treat those secrets as sensitive and never share them with unsolicited callers. If a device is lost or stolen, use official Apple recovery channels, enable Find My, and remote-lock or wipe the device when appropriate.
