Activation data

Protected material used to unlock or activate signing capability, separate from the private key itself.

Activation data is protected material used to unlock or authorize a signing operation without being the private key itself. In a code-signing system, the private key may stay in a hardened module or secure service, while activation data acts as the guard that enables the key for a specific session, device, or workflow. This separation reduces exposure if a workstation or support account is compromised.

In cyber security, activation data matters because attackers often target the operational path around cryptography rather than the key algorithm. If they steal activation data, they may be able to trigger signing actions, approve malicious binaries, or access a signing service long enough to misuse trust. Defenders protect it with strong authentication, hardware-backed controls, tight approval workflows, short-lived tokens, monitoring for unusual signing activity, and strict isolation of signing systems. Treat activation data as sensitive as the key material it protects, because losing it can still let attackers borrow legitimacy.
