Accessibility Tools

Google’s classification for apps whose core purpose is disability support, not general automation.

Accessibility Tools is Google’s classification for Android apps whose main purpose is disability support, such as screen reading, switch access, or other assistive controls. The label matters because accessibility services can observe and interact with the user interface, which makes them far more powerful than ordinary apps.

In cyber security, that power is a double-edged sword. Legitimate assistive apps use accessibility features to help users navigate devices, but malware can abuse the same APIs to read on-screen content, automate taps, or carry out fraud without obvious user interaction. By restricting access to verified Accessibility Tools, platforms can reduce abuse of this trust boundary and keep high-risk UI control features available only to apps that truly need them. Security teams often treat accessibility permissions as sensitive and review them closely.
