AC-3

A compressed audio format commonly associated with Dolby Digital playback.

AC-3, also called Dolby Digital, is a compressed audio codec used to store and play multichannel sound efficiently. It is part of the media stack that operating systems, games, players, and streaming apps rely on to decode audio correctly. Because many programs use shared system libraries for codec support, a problem in AC-3 handling can affect more than one application at once.

In cyber security, AC-3 matters because media parsers are a common source of stability bugs and, in some cases, exploitable memory-safety flaws. A malformed AC-3 stream may crash a player, break an app, or expose weaknesses in the decoding path. Defenders therefore test codec-related updates carefully, stage rollouts, and watch for crash spikes after patching. In real environments, AC-3 issues usually appear as sudden playback failures or application instability rather than as a visible security alert.
