Abnormal login

A sign-in pattern that differs from expected behavior and may merit investigation.

An abnormal login is a sign-in event that does not match normal user or system behavior. It may involve a login from an unusual country, at an odd time, from a new device, from an unfamiliar IP address, or after many failed attempts. Security teams treat these patterns as signals, not proof, because legitimate users can also travel, change devices, or use a VPN.

In cyber security, abnormal logins matter because stolen credentials are one of the most common ways attackers enter accounts. A successful sign-in that looks different from the account’s usual history can indicate credential theft, password spraying, session hijacking, or unauthorized privilege use. Defenders look for these events in authentication logs, compare them with baselines, and alert on impossible travel, repeated failures, or unexpected access to privileged systems. Fast review of abnormal logins can help stop an intrusion before attackers escalate or move deeper into a network.
