8-bit computer

A machine built around a processor design that handles data in 8-bit chunks.

An 8-bit computer is a system built around a processor that handles data in 8-bit chunks, meaning it processes small units of information at a time. These machines were common in early home and hobby computing, and they usually had limited memory, simple instruction sets, and tight hardware constraints. That makes them easy to recognize as a class of legacy platform with very specific design limits.

In cyber security, 8-bit computers matter because old embedded devices, industrial controllers, and retro systems can still run code with the same constraints: little RAM, weak isolation, and minimal security features. Attackers may target them through malformed input, unsafe firmware updates, or abuse of simple serial and cartridge interfaces. Defenders study them to understand legacy attack surfaces, harden emulators and emulation-based tooling, and preserve compatibility without exposing systems to modern threats.
