1-bit CPU

A processor that handles data one bit at a time, usually for narrow control or decision tasks.

A 1-bit CPU is a processor that evaluates data one bit at a time. Instead of running general-purpose software, it is designed for narrow control logic: simple yes-or-no decisions, Boolean tests, and output triggers. This makes it useful in deterministic environments such as industrial automation, where timing, reliability, and predictable behavior matter more than computing power.

In cyber security, a 1-bit CPU matters because small controllers are often part of OT and ICS environments. Their simplicity can reduce software complexity, but the surrounding system still creates risk through maintenance ports, engineering tools, network connections, and weak segmentation. Attackers usually target those supporting paths rather than the tiny processor itself. Defenders respond with inventory, access control, network isolation, monitoring, and recovery planning. The lesson is that minimal hardware does not equal security; it only shifts attention to the trust chain around it.
