An XML API is a programmatic interface that lets software send structured requests and receive responses encoded in XML. Administrators and automation tools can use it to query a system, change settings, or perform other supported operations without using a graphical interface.
Because an API may provide access to privileged functions, exposing it to untrusted networks can give attackers another surface to probe, especially if the service has an unpatched flaw or weak access controls. In security appliances, an XML API may be part of the management plane. Defenders should patch affected systems, restrict API access to trusted networks, protect credentials, and review logs for unusual requests.
