A workspace environment is the collection of files, settings, tools, and connected resources used to develop or test code. It may include source code, configuration files, terminals, environment variables, credentials, and access to repositories or remote services. Depending on the setup, work may run on a local computer, in a container, or on a remote host.
Workspace environments matter in cybersecurity because they can combine valuable code with secrets and access to other systems. A malicious editor extension or compromised development tool may be able to inspect workspace files or use the permissions available to the editor, then send data outside the organization. Defenses include limiting extension access, reviewing and allowlisting tools, keeping secrets out of project files, and monitoring for unexpected file or configuration changes.
