Workflow compression

The shortening of an attack process by automating or accelerating steps.

Workflow compression is the shortening of an attack chain by automating or accelerating steps that used to take more time or manual effort. Instead of a threat actor doing reconnaissance, writing phishing lures, adapting code, and coordinating access one step at a time, software or AI can speed up each stage and reduce the gap between planning and execution.

In cyber security, this matters because defenders often depend on time: time to detect, investigate, and block suspicious activity before it reaches impact. Workflow compression can make familiar attacks harder to stop by increasing attacker throughput and shrinking response windows. In real operations, it may show up as faster lure generation, quicker exploitation of known weaknesses, or more rapid follow-on abuse of stolen access. Defensively, the answer is stronger prevention, tighter identity controls, good logging, and monitoring for unusually fast movement from recon to action.
